THE ACT bushfires destroyed $6 million worth of equipment belonging to Geoscience Australia, which was also housed at the Mt Stromlo observatory.
John Manning, from Geoscience Australia, said an optical satellite laser ranging station had been destroyed by the fires.
``The laser tracking facility determined the precise position and orbit of satellites, and was one of only four stations in the Southern Hemisphere," he said.
